Stop and reverse Alzheimer’s and Dementia with coconut oil

Coconut oil is one of the factors increasingly being found to be associated protecting your brain  from going downhill with Dementia and Alzheimer’s.  It’s an oversimplification to say on the other hand that coconut oil by itself will protect your brain from both of these conditions.  However, coconut oil as a healthy saturated fat, along with other healthy saturated fats, coconut is a key foundation stone in both preventing and even reversing these conditions. It depending of course the extent of the onset and the willingness to make other dietary changes.  What then are the underlying processes at work that lead to these conditions? And how then do we start to use coconut oil to stop and reverse them?

Alzheimer’s and Dementia as chronic health disorders of the sugar/insulin cycle 

Insulin is a key substance in facilitating the uptake of glucose into the brain cells.  There are number of other scholarly citations setting out this insulin resistance/Alzheimers link here .
Writers such as Bruce Fife in his book- Stop Alzheimers Now – makes this argument about insulin resistance persuasively saying that glucose is the food of choice of choice for the brain.  With insulin resistance, areas of the brain essentially get starved of its favourite food – glucose – and start to die off.  This brain cell die off represents early onset Alzheimers and Dementia.

The solution according to Fife is to use a ketogenic dietary regime.  The brain is a remarkable organ that can derive its energy not only from glucose but ketones if it has to. Ketones can be readily metabolized in the bodies liver from coconut oil as a medium chain fatty acid.

A ketogenic dietary regime requires that a person eat 4.1 fat to carbohydrate/protein ratio daily.  Hence there has to be a fundamental shift in what a person eats daily. Significantly reduce their intake of sugary starchy carbohydrates from bread, pasta, rice, potatoes baked goods, wheat and flour on the one hand. And increase their intake of good quality saturated fats on the other from the likes of coconut oil, raw milk and butter.

What sort of dose rate for coconut oil

Generally, 3-4 dsp of coconut oil per day is considered to be a therapeutic dose.
You should start off with literal tsps per day. And ramp up your intake over 21 days or so to a full 3-4 dsps per day.  Too much too soon will possibly create die off of bugs and parasite in the gut. It also create undesirable effects in the bowel.
Also, hydration needs to be carefully ramped up in this time too as fats are essentially dehydrating as are sugars and starches.  There is also a line of thought that says that dehydration drives Alzheimers and Dementia.  We’ll come back to this important issue in another article.
Meantime aim for 3-4 dsps of coconut oil per day in cups of warm water. It is a pleasant easy way to take it. And to get to drinking at least a target of 3 litres per day .
